Super Joe Commander | |
The Super Joe Commander is the heart of the Adventure Team.
He came with the light vest that connects to the power pack sets.
The new 8.5" figure came with a variation on the Kung-Fu grip.
A new feature was the "1-2 Punch" wich moved the figure's arms
by means of panels on the figure's back (pictured to the left).
Since they were the same size I often dressed old Joe up in the
MEGO superhero clothes. Look, up in the sky it's "SUPER JOE!" |
Super Joe Adventurer (white)
The Super Joe Adventurer was the "bare-bones" figure of the Adventure Team.
He was more like the original series which didn't come with anything but the clothes on their backs.
Sporting a red jumpsuit with gold trim diagonally across the chest he's reminisent of ST:TNG.
With the standard scar on his cheek the Adventurer is ready to fill the shoes of the man of action.
Though clean-shaven the Adventurer shows his age with some monster side burns.
What he lacks in accessories he makes up in classic 70's charm.
They should have included a little silver disco ball for the Adventurer to deck his pad out with. |
Super Joe Adventurer (black)
The Black Super Joe Adventurer was the only other human Adventure Team member.
Identical to the white adventurer, he didn't come with squat, but because he's harder
to find he's worth considerably more. The Black Adventurer was decked out in a
green jumpsuit (pictured to the left). Like the other Adventurer in the series he has
the Kung-Fu grip mark 2. A sad fact about the construction of the 8.5" Joes was that
their hands and joints just couldn't withstand the vigorous playing and posing that
comes with being an action figure. Eventually they all become quadriplegic. |
Super Joe Commander (black)
WOW! | |
I had seen some Black adventurer figures with yellow jumpsuits instead of green
in old promo pictures and I always thought it was just a prototype design.
But it turns out there was a Black Commander as well as Adventurer figure.
This has to be the rarest of all Super Joe figures.
The only difference in the Black commander's jumpsuit is the color.
The gold piping is the same as the green jumpsuit. |
GOR King of the Terrons | |
Evil beast from outter space and the first villan to threaten the Aventure Team.
With his deadly "Destructo Ray" embedded in his chest GOR is ready to conquer the planet earth.
GOR was the first figure in the GI Joe series to use electronics to interact with other figures.
With his arms raised menacingly GOR's red chest beam would come on and you could save
the universe by having any one of the Adventure Team knock him over with the "1-2 Punch."
As he hit the dirt his dreams of global conquest would end with the flickering of a red L.E.D.
He was also included as part of the Rocket Command Center in a set sold exclusively at SEARS. |
Darkon | |
Evil green clone of the Super Joe Commander? Or 2nd cousin twice removed?
Either way , Darkon's just another example of the tough times Super Joe grew up in.
He comes with a black power vest with the obligatory evil red light. His helmet was
probably cast from the same mold as the one from the "Treacherous Dive" equipment set.
The one original piece in his arsenal was a chrome plated lightning sword (pictured left).
Darkon was the last and only figure to be released in '78. Cheaply produced but still cool.
The poor fellow to my left is exibiting severe joint failure common to Super Joe. |
The Shield | |
The first Super Joe Figure in the new Night Fighters series that had built in lights.
His left arm consisted of a chrome plated disc with a light in the middle and wasn't posable.
His head was separate from his body in that it was part of the silver chest plate that wrapped
around him. His face was made of clear plastic and looked pretty cool. (unfortuately it's the only
part of him I still have). I wanted to get Luminos, but when my Dad took me to "Circus World"
The Shield was all they had. As with many toy buying decisions I was too impatient to wait.
Being that he had no left arm it was a sad day for me when his right hand fell off. |
Luminos | |
One of the non-human members of the Adventure Team. Boy I really wanted this one.
This guy was the coolest. He was made entirely of clear plastic. He was basically the 8.5"
version of the MEGO MICRONAUTS time traveller. He had a light inside of his body that you
could point forwards as a beam or rotate up to illuminate his clear face (ala The Shield).
Part of the Night Fighters series, Luminos was specially made to "Fight by Night with Light!"
The only problem I can remember is how hard it was to get the darned AA battery in and out of
The Shield's back and the Super Joe Commander's Power pack. Ahhhhhhh, Eveready...... |
Terron "The Beast From Beyond"
The second and final example of the electronic interative breakthrough.
As menacing as the Terron may seem, the meerest flicker from the Super Joe Commander's
power vest would halt any forward momentum of the scuttling monster. Too bad for GOR.
Strangely enough, this guy is probably the most valuable piece in the whole Super Joe line.
Although, you would probably have to have it in the original packaging for that to be true.
Aside from Darkon the Terron was the only other item to be released in 1978. Most of the
budget for the Super Joe line must have been spent on this elaborate interactive beastie. |
